Founded in 1753 based on physician Sir Hans Sloane's collection, the museum opened in 1759 as the world's first national public museum. Housed initially in Montagu House, the current building designed by Robert Smirke (1823-1852) features the iconic Greek Revival fa?ade and expanded through the spectacular Great Court redesign in 2000. Its founding purpose was to house "a collection of the world" for public enlightenment regardless of social status. Key viewpoints include the Great Court with its Foster-designed glass roof, the Rosetta Stone in its new gallery context, the Parthenon sculptures room, Assyrian lion hunt reliefs, and Enlightenment Gallery displaying original collection cabinets. The museum represents evolving ideas about cultural preservation and public access.
